Vienna – It is extremely important to Wienerberger that people are able to live in sustainable, safe, and affordable housing. Since 2012 the company has worked with aid organization Habitat for Humanity International to support social projects, already helping more than 3,140 people.
As one of the world’s biggest suppliers of building material and infrastructure solutions we bear a special responsibility in the area of Environmental Social Governance (ESG). It is immensely important to create housing for those who are underprivileged and to improve their living conditions. Our partnership with Habitat for Humanity International enables us to do our part.
Help Constructing and Renovating Buildings
Wienerberger supports the construction and renovation of residential and other buildings, such as schools and welfare facilities with building materials and construction expertise. Between 2018 and 2020 alone, 106 residential units were either constructed or renovated by the company. Thanks to the partnership with Habitat for Humanity thousands of people in more than eight countries today live in healthier and warmer houses: in Bulgaria, Hungary, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, USA and the United Kingdom. In addition, Wienerberger employees provide hands-on assistance with the construction of houses on volunteer programs. The company also seeks to raise awareness among politicians and public authorities of the importance of social housing.
From Houses to Primary Schools and Guesthouses
Wienerberger not only works with Habitat for Humanity in the field of housing construction. The company’s joint efforts with Habitat for Humanity enable children to learn more effectively as they can concentrate better in warm classrooms. Older people and those with disabilities have the chance to live a life of dignity in decent living conditions. Victims of domestic abuse can feel safer and people in need are supported through community projects such as community centers or facilities for people with special needs.
ESG: Wienerberger Committed to Corporate Social Responsibility
In its social projects the company adheres to the highest national and international standards of ESG. In addition, it has set itself an ambitious goal for corporate social responsibility: to build 200 housing units per year with its products for people in need across the world between 2021 and 2023. Wienerberger supports the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By 2030 everyone should have access to safe, decent, and affordable housing and to basic services.

Wienerberger and Habitat for Humanity: Project Examples
In the Romanian town of Berceni – in the county of Prahova – Wienerberger is supporting a social housing project and providing twelve families with decent housing built according to modern standards. In North Macedonia, Wienerberger in cooperation with Habitat for Humanity supports a primary school in Bashino Seles (Veles). As a leaky roof made it difficult for children to attend school, Wienerberger donated the roof tiles and other necessary material to renovate it. In the northeastern Hungarian city of Miskolc, Wienerberger collaborated with the Hungarian foundation Szimbiózis Alapítvány to construct a guesthouse. This provides accommodation for visitors wishing to spend time with family members, in particular people with autism or Down syndrome, living in the nearby Willow House.
